4 Non-Profit Myths to Leave Behind in 2025

What better way to step into 2026 than by letting go of old beliefs that may quietly hold our organizations back?  Here are 4 non-profit myths we think it’s time we all leave behind.

Myth 1: “We can’t say no… burnout is just part of the job.”

We’ve seen non-profits often operate from a place of abundance in mission but a shortage in capacity. You know the feeling, when “yes” becomes your default response and your team is running on empty because they care so deeply?

A simple shift: Say yes to the work that aligns with your mission and goals, and no to what drains time, energy, or focus. Normalize boundaries and sustainable pacing. Consider offering employee-centred benefits that focus on rest and retention.

Myth 2: “We don’t have time for evaluation.”

Here’s the thing: you’re already evaluating.  You’re doing it informally, in conversations with participants and in the “how did that go?” chats with your team.

A simple shift: Pick three metrics and one reflection question to track consistently. Evaluation doesn’t need to be complicated! It’s a habit that makes your work clear and more effective.

Myth 3: “Strategic planning only needs to happen every five years.”

A static plan will be outdated long before it’s supposed to be refreshed. There will be signs - you can quote us!

A simple shift: Shift to revisiting your strategic plan quarterly or semi-annually. It’s not just a one-time event!

Myth 4: “We have to do everything ourselves.”

Burnout thrives in isolation. No organization can (or should) be an expert in everything.

A simple shift: Embrace partnerships, shared services, and external support. Collaboration lightens the load and, ultimately, strengthens impact.*

*We know that many (if not all) of the organizations we work with are already doing this in some way… and that’s pretty awesome.

As we welcome 2026, which myth is your team ready to release? Change doesn’t always require big moves; sometimes it starts by letting go of the stories that no longer serve us.

We hope you and your organizations take time for reflection, rest, and clarity as we step into the new year. We appreciate you being part of our L4i community!

Happy Holidays!
